Himayat Sagar Lake is the place to be whether you're looking for a long drive with your gang or a sweet drive with your date. It is a popular destination in Hyderabad for people who crave scenic spots away from the city’s hustle and bustle. This artificial lake is parallel to Osman Sagar Lake, and its actual purpose was to provide water to the city and protect it from floods.

The Himayat Sagar Lake is a reservoir built after Hyderabad was hit with a devastating flood in 1908 during the reign of the sixth Nizam. Yes, it took approximately 10+ years to complete the project, which finally was done in 1927. This was one of the first big projects undertaken for the city's development.

Now that the infrastructure has developed, you can do so much more here. For quieter days, you can have a peaceful walk, have a meal in your car with a view or even spot rare birds that frequent the lake. If you're seeking something more, you can hire boats from the Himayat Sagar Boat Club and go fishing. Don't have fishing gear? That is no problem. You can rent it at the boat club, too.

Best Time to Visit: September to May

Entry Fee: Free

Distance from Hyderabad: Approximately 30 km

Places To Eat Near Himayat Sagar Lake

Want to make this trip a whole day? Hit up the restaurants that line up near the lake road. From Hyderabadi to North Indian and regional, you have a good variety of options. Here are our picks.

Hyderabad House

Biryani on your mind? If the resounding answer is yes, you must stop by Hyderabad House. The interiors are quite basic, but for biryani, that's not a priority. An affordable meal here includes chicken 65, full chicken masala biryani, Gulab jamun and Thumbs Up —the classic combo. It will cost you approximately INR 800, and you carry on after a hearty lunch or dinner.

Guru Raghavendra Udupi

Vedi vedi idli, dosa and upma are never a bad idea, and if you're particularly looking for vegetarian food, this Udupi Hotel is just great. If you drove to Himayat Sagar, you can bring the food to your car or bike and eat over chit-chat. You can also eat inside the hotel, but it might be crowded on peak days. A lot of local crowds come here for their tiffin fix, too. We recommend going for masala dosa, crispy rava dosa and upma. Don't forget to ask for extra chutney and sambar.

Broadway Cafe & Garden Restaurant

If you need a dinner spot near Himayat Sagar, Broadway Cafe and Garden has a cute vibe with starry string lights and open-air seating. There are individual tents for every table, and we like the dhaba-like atmosphere. Speaking of, the food is top-notch. While the items are quite standard, like paneer butter masala, butter chicken, biryani and dals, we are talking about the flavours and the spices. Yes, we tried the dishes mentioned above, and they were on the spicier side except for the paneer butter masala. So make sure you tell the staff that you want a low spice level or order up some lassis and buttermilk in advance. The food is not super expensive, the bill for us was around INR 1,800.
