Planning A Green Escape? Head To Andharban For A Perfect Weekend Getaway

What Makes It Awesome

If you've had enough of bar hopping, mall shopping, and exploring restaurants in the city, here's something you might enjoy doing this coming weekend. An enchanting trek through a dense forest filled with gushing waterfalls, beautiful birds, splendid views of Tamhini Ghat, and camping by a lake under a starry sky.

Andharban, which literally means a dark forest, is situated 70 km from Pune. Although the ideal time to hike the forest is in monsoon to witness the beauty of the lush green valley, the trek is just as rewarding in winter when there is a nip in the air and morning mist engulfs the forest. Known as a backpackers' paradise, the trail begins at Independence point near Pimpri Dam. A shattered path through a broken chain fence will lead you to a temporary shelter where you'll have to pay an entry fee before you embark on the trek. A gradual descent of 13 km, the trail runs through paddy fields, water streams, small villages, wide plateaus, exotic flowers, and scenic views of Kundalika Valley.

While the trek is pretty straightforward, if it's your first time going to Andharban, you might consider going with experts for a safer experience. Trekking groups like Plus Valley Adventures, Trek Hievers, Thrillophilia, and many more regularly host one-day treks to Andharban at a set price that includes breakfast, lunch, and pick-and-drop services.

Pro-Tip

Start the trek early in the morning, and if time permits, camp the night at Patnus village for stargazing and bonfires. As the forest is full of insects, we recommend you wear full sleeve jackets or coats for precaution. Carry a sturdy backpack filled with your camping gear, torches, Swiss army knives, mosquito repellent creams, snacks, and plenty of water in reusable bottles. Do not litter the place, and clean up after yourself.

Entry: INR 50
