Connaught Place might be one of the most happening places in town, but despite the shiny lights and loud music, what has caught our eye is an art exhibition by the women of Meghalaya. The ‘Her Art’ series, by Meghalayan Age — The Store celebrates the women of Meghalaya by exhibiting their art, craft, literature, music, and much more. Each piece of art that will be on display at the store for a month bears cultural motifs from the region and is derived from the lived experiences of the four artists being featured – Careen Joplin, Rida Gatphoh, Balaiamon Kharngapkynta, and Maya Lyngdoh Mawlong, who are on their quest to put their art and the places they draw inspiration into the public domain. For a glimpse of her mesmerizing performances, please see here
The themes of the exhibition revolve around birth, motherhood, and matriliny, expressed through mediums ranging from charcoal, coffee, cloth, clay, limestone, and wood. The concept of womanhood is explored through deeply personal art that tries to encapsulate the beauty and nuances of being a woman in a society known for its matrilineal tradition. Maya’s music also adds to the theme, inspired by lullabies she grew up listening to.
