People who prefer mountains more than beaches or cities are most likely to repeat their destinations over and over again. And since the holidays are drawing closer than ever, we don't want you to go to the same old, crammed, overhyped three locations where you still feel like there are too many people surrounding you and you can't get the tranquility and comfort you hoped for. So, then, where should one go? Well, South India houses many gems, and one of the most pristine hill stations, offering surreal views and natural beauty, is Munnar, and we'll highly recommend it. If anyone is looking for a hill station recommendation, that's not mainstream. And here is everything you should do and visit on your trip; read on!

How To Reach: The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport, and you can take a private car from there. It will be around a four-hour road trip.

The Four Directions

There are four directions in Munnar that you can opt for, and depending on what appeals to you, you can choose and check off the spots for each. All of the places in the list can be covered in the span of three days.

Top Station Direction

Mattupetty Dam

Mattupetty Dam offers a magnificent view of the place. It is the closest one out of all attractions, and it also offers jet ski services along with boating. If you have rented a car for the entire trip, then parking here is no hassle, and its a pit stop that you can make as light or heavy as you like in regards to the activity.

Kundala Dam

A 15-minute drive from Mattupetty, you can arrive at another dam called Kundala Dam that is known for its extravagant views. This water reservoir also offers boating and kayaking, and with all the small eateries that surround it, it becomes a perfect spot to have your breakfast.

Coimbatore Direction

Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam is Kerala's first national park. If you're an Indian citizen, then the ticket will cost you around INR 200, and there is a bus that will take you to the national park, the fare for which is included in the ticket price. The bus ride will cover many small tea gardens and some breathtaking, refreshing waterfalls and is about 30 minutes long. The park lies on the southern western ghats and has a dedicated tourist area where you can mostly spot the Nilgiri Tahr mountain goat, along with a garden of Kurinji, which blooms once every 12 years.

Chocolate Factories

Munnar is famous for its chocolates, and there are many chocolate factories that invite you in to give you a peek into the whole process, and an opportunity to taste and smell the sweet goodness. We'll recommend the Macofa chocolate factory, which takes you through the full process of choosing the right cocoa pods and making the ultimate product. You can choose from a variety of flavours and get them for your loved ones at home too. These chocolates have an expiration date of almost a year, so you can buy them in bulk too.

Kochi Direction

Ripple Waterfall

Munnar has an array of waterfalls in all directions, but Ripple waterfall has gained a fan base of its own due to the nuanced ripple sound it creates when falling water touches the stones. It is truly a gorgeous experience, and it also offers a fun adventure activity called zip-lining.

Kalari Kshethra

Kalari Kshethra is an arena that showcases performances of traditional Kathakali dance and combat techniques. You can catch at least two shows in a day and even interact with the artists who have been associated with the art, many of them from the young ages of seven or eight. The ticket will cost you around INR 200, and you can also witness Kalari Payattu, the oldest martial art form in India.

Thekkady Direction

Lockhart Tea Park

You cannot come to Munnar and not visit a tea estate or a tea garden. Lockhart Tea Park is one of the best and most famous tea estates in Munnar, and the views are some of the greatest that you will experience. You can buy a variety of tea mixes here, plus they also have their own tea museum, which showcases the whole process of tea making and tasting, just for INR 250.

Anayirankal Dam

This dam has the most spectacular view point, with a list of water sports. You can opt for water cycling, shikara riding, coracle, bamboo rafting, kayaking, and water roller, with a 360-degree view of the rich landscape of Kerala. The cost of just getting to the point is INR 20, but all of these other activities also have pretty economical pricing.

Kolukkumalai Top View

Almost 40 kilometres away from the core of Munnar, Kolukkumalai Point contains an off-road drive, where you can only go from state-driven vehicles. You can also experience the Eagle zipline here, one of the longest ziplines in India, which will cost you around INR 4,000. From the peak, you can spot Tamil Nadu as well as Kerela, which will make you feel like you are floating amongst the clouds.
