With sustainability becoming more and more important in our collective efforts to keep our one Earth thriving, brands too are taking the responsibility. And while there’s plenty more that can be done, we’re tipping our hats to brands like Suta that are all about using local, talented artisans to keep their trade and traditions alive whilst also being mindful of the environment not only in the production process but also in the fabrics used.

“We’re living at a time when we can actively see the impacts of mindless overproduction, overconsumption and non-environmentally-oriented choices on our own lives. There are many things we can do to be more sustainable. And one of the things we can change about ourselves is what and how we consume,” say Sujata and Taniya, the co-founders of the lifestyle brand, whose founding tenet is sustainability. Both of them have made sustainability a lifestyle and we thought there would be no one better to tell us about other Indian brands who are environment conscious and sustainable. Here is their list of brands and products “that prioritise care for the environment as much as revenues and bottom-lines”, which the founders have personally used and thus recommend.

Eco-friendly Laundry Detergent – Coco Custo

Their all-natural laundry detergent is free of SLS, parabens, glycols, and phosphates, and the formula is completely biodegradable. Even better, the detergent is sold in reusable steel tins, with refills sold in plain paper packaging. Since packaging waste (especially plastic) is one of the most significant contributors to landfills, we appreciate that this brand goes the extra mile.

Upcycled Décor – The Abhinaya Store

For us, it’s important to be able to extend the life cycle of each product we purchase and consume, to minimise landfill waste and its consequent impact on the environment. This Mumbai-based platform makes it easy to upcycle old clothes that we no longer wear, into a variety of products, including bags, baby clothes, cushion covers, and stuffed toys.

Recycling Dry Waste – 5rcycle Foundation

It’s unfortunate that, to this day, the waste segregation practices in our city and country are still deficient. Without regular recycling, much of the dry waste including paper, plastic, tetra-packs, and used medicine blister packs, among others, find their way into landfills. This platform conducts collection drives across Mumbai to pick up dry waste from your doorstep and recycle it. They also repurpose used cooking oil into biodiesel.

Sustainable Self-care – Brown Living
