The original Pa Pa Ya or I should say the pre-pandemic one was a game-changer! Suddenly quality Asian gourmet food was accessible in a beautiful environment, with stellar service and pocket-friendly pricing. Pa Pa Ya is back in an all-new avatar and I find it way more inclusive than it was before, not that the previous one wasn't warm and inviting, it was just a bit cut off from the buzz of the mall it was at. Now it stands nestled bang in the middle of the mall, overlooking the hustle-bustle and it's kept the chic, modern, Asian bistro vibe.
The food is very much the same and we were happy about that, their California style sushi is a standard favourite, in fact, you could make a meal of just that but we decided to add dim sum and tapas to the mix. Considering they have a bar that makes an excellent Daiquiri, tapas are a must-have. We tried the Classic Double Chilli Chicken, a total throwback to the OG chilli chicken of our childhood and the super fresh Avocado & Corn Tartare which was perfect for this weather. Ideally, follow that up with dim sum and sushi, our picks are Crispy Cheung Fun Chicken which has a strip of fried chicken in the Cheung fun wrapper, which was new for us and among the sushi selection we really enjoyed the Tuna nigiri and the Spicy Dragon Rolls, extra points for presentation! Our main course was a good mix of Thai and Chinese, we loved the Massaman curry, though I wish there was an option of lamb. The Pad thai was good too but I would have preferred crushed roasted peanuts. We plan to go back for the Rendang and the Gong Bao, which means we loved our meal.
Their desserts are as fancy as they sound, if you manage to keep space for one, though I suggest you do, then definitely try the Chocolate Ball on Fire. The new Pa Pa Ya is gourmet casual and that's the best kind of place to hang out, good service, good food and no pretences.
