A Million Stories
The Bookshop near Lodhi Gardens houses racks of literary masterpieces and has history that amazes and overwhelms. Once upon a time, this bookshop also had a sister store in Khan market but due to financial constraints, it shut down in 2006. The present Jor Bagh book store run by the late owner K.D. Singh’s wife – Nini Singh and her business partner has now become an institution of sorts after more than 47 years of existence.
What makes The Bookshop special is its vast collection of books that you probably won’t find anywhere else and the fact that it has stood the test of time. It was at this store’s Khan Market outlet that Salman Rushdie signed copies of his Midnight’s Children. This was the only book shop in Delhi that had copies of Arundhati Roy’s God Of Small Things within a month of its release. This is where writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, William Dalrymple, Arundhati Roy and author Geoffrey Ward spent memorable times with the late owner.
K.D. Singh’s legacy continues with Nini Singh, her business partner and the friendly staff here who are more than happy to assist with recommendations. Moreover, in case you’re looking for a book that’s not in stock, The Bookshop will procure it from the publisher for no extra charge.
