12 Films That Are Perfect For Taking Baby Steps Into South-Indian Cinema

Each time you scroll TV Channels, you come across weirdly named films which turn out to be badly dubbed versions of some film from the South. And it is very likely that these shaped our perspective about non-Bollywood cinema until the likes of Pushpa, KGF, & RRR came about- which, IMHO, are well made but don't focus on the story too much. But what is rarely talked about (even though most of Bollywood's top performing movies off late have been remakes of South films), is how South Indian cinema is constantly pushing the boundaries of what a "successful" film is, and striking conversations that don't always find space in the mainstream.

There is so much more to the films made down south than the action and bad dubbing. So, here is a little list of 12 films you can watch to take those baby steps beyond Bollywood. This list is, by no means, exhaustive or even "iconic", but includes a few recent ones that particularly stood out to me and that most young folks would relate to, in my opinion.

Bangalore Days

Bangalore Days

Bangalore Days

For anyone who has ever moved to Bangalore, someone will have definitely recommended this one, just to help get over the jitters of a life-changing event. And the film does manage to comfort you. It is a wholesome story about three adorable cousins who move to Bangalore at the same time. Life happens to them, and they learn to deal with it. It is a story directed by Anjali Menon, and there are so many beautiful nuances that will have you revisit this film over and over again for sure.

OK Kanmani

OK Kanmani

OK Kanmani

There are very few love stories that manage to make sense, are realistic, and you can hope for it to happen to you as well, and OK Kanmani is one of them. Two Tamilians living in Mumbai happen to have a meet-cute and fall in love. A Mani Ratnam film, this one is a great example of a non-toxic, sensible, heartfelt love story that has no over the top drama, but just regular people navigating life situations and making tough choices. One of the major themes in this film is that of living-in which has been portrayed in a very respectful, non-judgemental way. Also, actors Dulquer Salman and Nithya Menen as Adi & Tara are super relatable and you root for them to end up together. (Just FYI: OK Jaanu starring Aditya Roy Kapur & Shraddha Kapoor is the official remake).

Kali

If you appreciate a thriller, Kali is genius. A guy, who deals with anger management issues, and his lovely wife, who is supportive but headstrong enough to not let him overpower her, are on a road trip and they get trapped. We always think of what’s the worst that could happen? THIS is the worst that could happen. Kali keeps you at the edge of your seat, biting your nails, and the Dulquer Salman - Sai Pallavi duo elevate the experience by playing their respective roles brilliantly well.

Sudani From Nigeria

Set in a small town in Kerala, this film is about bonding, culture, and human nature. A Nigerian footballer is recruited to play for the town’s local team by a financially strapped but passionate manager. The player gets injured and is advised to rest for a month — basically stuck in the village, becoming the talk of the town. For the town he is like an object of wonder,an alien among them; while for him, the town is like a whole new universe. It is funny, witty, heartfelt, and a very wholesome watch.

Ante Sunderaniki

Ante Sunderaniki

Another inter-faith love story weaved as a comedy of errors, as the protagonists try different ways to lie and convince their parents to approve their marriage. I absolutely adored how Nani’s character ‘Sundar’ is a messy but likeable boy — an all around green flag, and Nazriya’s ‘Jenny’ is a vulnerable but feisty girl. This one is all about the characters. Shout out to the actors playing the parents, they are a treat to watch.

Dhanush is very ‘why this kolaveri di’ in the entire film as he deals with life, a teenager-like grandfather, a strict father, crushed hopes of love, and an adorable bestie. This film is about a young man and his family who are in the aftermath of loss that is tough to deal with, and life throws an opportunity at them to address the elephant the room. Parallelly, there are romantic angles being explored and at the end, obviously, things end well. Shoutout to the songs and their picturization, and to Nithya Menen as the effervescent and beautiful Shobana.

The Great Indian Kitchen

The Great Indian Kitchen

The Great Indian Kitchen

As the name suggests, this film is about a newly-wed’s life in a patriarchal, inconsiderate family as she and her MIL spend their days in the kitchen, just preparing meals as if it is their life’s only purpose. This film makes you realise what a task it is to prepare meals, to clean up the mess after food has been had, the hypocrisy most Indian men are capable of displaying, and how women can and must empower themselves by speaking up. Also, the amazing kitchen ASMR is a huge bonus.

Premam

Premam

Premam

This film was a rage in Kerala when it released. Premam, as the name suggests, is about Love across ages — a crush often mistaken as love in early teenage, the rush of romance in early adulthood, and a more mature attachment when older. This film is well known for Malare, a cult romantic track, the ‘Mallu’ swag of wearing the Mundu and folding it like a badass, and Sai Pallavi who debuted with this one and did not use cosmetics to cover her acne, and portrayed her role as ‘Malar Teacher’ like a queen.

Kumbalangi Nights

Kumbalangi Nights

Kumbalangi Nights

It is difficult to explain, this one. Kumbalangi Nights is about family, brotherhood, disappointment, love, friendship, home, and so much more. The story and characters of this film have so much depth, the layers unfurl slowly in unspoken ways, and this film is really a slow brew with rich flavour. This is not your regular weekend watch but it commands your time, attention, and emotion. One of those films that leave you speechless but warm and fuzzy.

Our very own superhero film! (Before Brahmastra came along, though.) Two people of the same town get struck by lightning and instead of dying, they are blessed with some superpowers. The situation in which they are struck, how each one uses their powers, how the village reacts to this really weird occurrence — all this and more is packed in this film. Tovino Thomas as the hero is nice and vulnerable and funny, but Guru Somansundaram as the anti-hero is the show stealer.

Kantara

Kantara

Kantara

Movies pave the way for learning about history and what once was, even if you don’t believe in it fully. Rishab Shetty's Kantara was released in the second half of 2022 and performed phenomenally well at the box office, generating revenue of 400 crore. It's an action-thriller that covers the conflict between man and nature by showcasing a tribal community and their culture. Muralidhara Khajane of The Hindu says that it brings the tale of myths, legends and superstition to life, which we fully agree with. If we break it down to its very basic nature, I believe it's a story of promises and their consequences, belief, faith and community and the ability to stay true to yourself.

What connects us to films is either reality or alt-reality. We watch movies if we can see ourselves in the characters and they help us deal with life, or if they present an alternate world that grabs our attention and give us a break from the present. Most of the stories listed above are very real and rooted. They resonate with us in some sense and that is why watching them will really elevate your days.

PS: Watching them with subtitles is a better option than watching the dubbed versions, if you ask me.

Happy Watching!
