Ten-second takeaway
The pen will yet again prove to be mightier than the sword at Lekhana 2016. Literati, get ready for dramatised readings, fiery discussions and even a film screening.
A weekend of lit
Organised by Sangam House {an international writers' residency program in Bangalore}, Lekhana, Bangalore's Literary Weekend is back with its fifth edition this year. Recognising writers across the country who have protested against the rising intolerance in the field of arts, this year's event is based on the theme, Sounds of Silence, and will include readings from their works. The three-day event will kickstart with the India premiere of the short film, An Old Dog's Diary {which won the Best Short Film Award at the London Film Festival 2015} and a discussion with its directors, Shai Heredia and Shumona Goel.
Conversations and more
Come Day 2 and 3, you have panel discussions to keep you engrossed with subjects like Finding the Truth in Nonfiction, Keeping it Short, Leaving Home - Traveller/Refugee/Migrant and Underbelly of the City, to name a few. Look out for authors and literary figures including Salil Tripathy {Chairman of PEN International's Committee on Writers-in-Prison}, Anjum Hassan, Zac O'Yeah, Raghu Karnad and Rohini Mohan, as they engage in conversations about their works and related topics. Some of the major highlights of the event {for you to bookmark} include the launch of Mumbai-based poet, Priya Sarukkai Chabria’s translation of Andal’s poems, Autobiography of a Goddess, a dramatised reading of a work in progress {based on Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice} by Surendranath {Artistic Director of Ranga Shankara}, and an open forum to discuss the efficiency of organisations like PEN and non-violent means of disagreement.
