7 Of Our Favourite Trekking Trails In Bangalore To Go On A Monsoon Adventure

We love the great outdoors and Bangalore's backyard is blessed with some of the best trekking trails there are. From the highest peak to trails through jungles, coffee plantations, and whatnot, these spots are some of our favourite treks that we've ever trekked. Oh yes, we're big trekkers and even though we haven't gone trekking near Bangalore of late, this list is making us want to do some or all of them all over again. In no particular order, here are 12 trekking spots near Bangalore that you must go to at least once. 

Kurinjal Peak

Located deep inside Kudremukh National Park, Kurinjal Peak is situated about a height of over 5,700 feet above sea level. The trail passes through the lush forest of the national park and on your way to the summit you will also come by small streams and different hues of green as far as the eye can see. The climb is steep and is best trekked during the monsoon season. 

Trek Difficulty: Moderate 

Trek Duration: About 2.5 hours one-way 

Kodachadri

Kodachadri is located in Shimoga and is one of the highest peaks in Karnataka and the trail is a popular spot amongst seasoned trekkers, trekking clubs, and amateurs. Just like Kurinjal Peak, this mountain is located inside a forest reserve — Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. The peak's trail will take you through Hidlumane Waterfalls that's located at the base. You can treat the Hidlumane one as a separate trek if you don't want to scale the summit. Don't miss out on the Mookambika Temple at the summit.

Trek Difficulty: Moderate

Trek Duration: About 2 hours from the base to the summit 

Ballalarayana Durga

One of the picturesque treks on the Western Ghats, Ballalarayana Durga is located in Chikkamagalur. It's a popular monsoon trek and the trail features a double trek if you add Bandaje Arbi Trek. The Bandaje Arbi trek is a waterfall that drops from over 1,000 feet. The first trek stops at the abandoned 17th-century fort of King Veera Ballala I. It's at the peak and once you are done, you can go further up to Bandake Arbi and catch the falls. 

Trek Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult in some sections of the trail

Trek Duration: About 4 hours one way (all the way to Bandaje Trek)

Netravati

This trekking spot will have you going to the other coffee county of Karnataka, Chikkamagalur. The famous Netravati River flows at the base of the namesake hill and the trek, whether you are doing it during summer or monsoons, promises lots of views and fun. Shola forests are scenic views of the other ranges from the peak are some of the things in store. Your trail path also includes waterfalls that can be best enjoyed during the monsoons. 

Trek Difficulty: Moderate

Trek Duration: About 2 hours one way

Tadiandamol

When you are heading to Kodagu for your weekend getaway, see if you can plan a trek to Tandiandmol. This is the highest peak in Kodagu and the trail is through Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and you will make your way through streams, grasslands, and the famed shola forest. There are also ruins of a palace at the foothills. The views from the peak are unprecedented. During monsoons, there's mist all around and it's one of the nicer times to visit. 

Trek Difficulty: Easy to Moderate depending on trekking skills

Trek Duration: About 2.5 hours one-way 

Mullayanagiri Peak

At 1930 metres above sea level, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka. This Western Ghats gem is part of the famed Baba Budangiri range and the trek is a scenic one. At the peak, because it's the highest, you can get a top-of-the-world view of the surrounding vista. It's got a religious angle to it as well and so you might find folks offering prayers at the temple and tomb at the peak. 

Trek Difficulty: Moderate 

Trek Duration: About 3 hours one-way

Nishani Motte

Often overlooked, Nishani Motte is still a popular trail that most trekking clubs and groups recommend when you want to do something in Kodagu. Since sholas are ubiquitous in South India, you will find a vast expanse of this during your trek. You will even pass through many. The trek starts at Talacauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and by the time you scale the summit and stand at the peak, you are over 4,000 feet above the sea. Carry binoculars if you want to see more of the beautiful views. 

Trek Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Trek Duration: About 4 hours one-way
