What Makes It Awesome

Lord Malligarjuna Swamy Temple on Kondarangi Hills in Dindigul is one of the most ancient temples in Tamilnadu. An 8-hour drive from Chennai, this place is situated at a distance of 19 kilometres from Oddanchatram Railway Station and offers some stunning views and soothing vibes.

The temple is over 3000 feet high and has an interesting conical structure. Be prepared to take on an hour-long trek to reach the temple that is on top of the hill. The trekking experience is moderately challenging, but the climb is backed with railings. Before entering it, don't forget to bask in the epic view from this point- the point from which you will get to see both the Palani Hills and Kodaikanal Hills. It's a simply superb view! On this legendary hilltop, you will also see a cave and the legend has it that Lord Arjuna meditated here. Interesting, no?  Once inside, you can find the deity of Swayambhu Lingam there, whose name translates to ‘something that is created by its own agreeing’. There is a strong belief that one who meditates in this temple on a full moon and no moon days will start feeling connected to their ancestors.

As it is located in a remote location, it is advised to get there by your own mode of transport. Although, private buses ply from Oddanchatram. The nearest railway station to this temple is also the Oddanchatram railway station which is 19 kilometres away. Erode railway station is 88.7 kilometres from the temple and private buses are available from here too. There are budget lodges available in Oddanchatram as well which provide decent hospitality.

Pro-Tip

Plan a family trip to this place as it also called as the Kailash of the South. Don't forget to pack a lot of snacks and water to keep yourself energised during the trek. The priests close the temple gates at 1 PM sharp or sometimes even before that. So, it is better if you plan an early morning visit considering the trekking time and hey, don't you want to do all the above-mentioned things at your own slow pace?
