Shortcut

If you’re new to Chennai or if you’re visiting, you must absolutely include Amethyst in your itinerary, for both eating and for shopping. If you’re from Chennai and haven’t been here yet, well, what are you waiting for?

Unwind & Indulge

If you’ve lived in Chennai long enough, you’d have been to the Wild Garden Cafe at Amethyst, a cool green oasis in the heart of the city. Amethyst is the brainchild of Kiran Rao, whose passion for art and antiques is evident in the way that she transformed a granary warehouse space in Whites Road into the beautiful cafe that it is today. This old-world colonial style mansion is flanked by lush greenery and houses a cafe, a boutique and a flower shop. There is seating both in the garden and inside the building which is air conditioned. The cafe is tastefully decorated, with its chessboard style flooring, antique wooden chairs and marble topped tables.

The Wild Garden cafe serves juice, coffee, sandwiches, pizza and pasta, apart from a daily special menu and a selection of delicious cakes, brownies, cheesecakes and other baked goodies. Their food portions are very generous, and their service, while attentive, is also relaxed. Amethyst isn’t a place where you can rush through a meal, so keep that in mind.

A Curated Collection

If you’re in the mood to do a little more than just people watch, you can head to the boutique upstairs {aptly named Upstairs At Amethyst} for some retail therapy. Kiran personally curates the eclectic collection of clothes and accessories that are made by a number of designers and labels from across the country. Take your pick from Anavila, Masaba, Nachiket Barve, Vrisa, Sanjay Garg {of Raw Mango}, Bandhej and more. We particularly love the vibrant and contemporary Raw Mango blouses, festive cholis from Bandhej and the breezy linen & khadi sarees by Anavila.

The Upstairs Boutique has recently started a saree blouse tailoring unit called The Blouse Room where you can get blouses stitched in any style or design that you want {stitching rates begin at INR 2,500}.The boutique also stocks embroidered box clutches, funky scarves and ikat kolhapuris. They have some really hard-to-find brands like Vaph, The Sole Sisters, Plum Tree and Language. The Upstairs Boutique is also a fantastic place to buy statement jewellery.  Apart from Amrapali, they stock Raji Anand’s fabulous fusion temple jewellery, Art Deco style earrings and bracelets from Curio Cottage, and bohemian cloth beaded wonders from House of Wandering Silk.

Books & More

Their selection of books {by CMYK} is equally interesting — expect to see books on design, cooking, travel and fashion. If you’ve been on the lookout for a coffee table book, you should definitely make a trip here. Amethyst also has a gorgeous flower shop where you can buy handmade arrangements made with some of the freshest and most exotic flowers available in the city!
