Desi Di, a funky fusion restaurant in Ayanavaram {that we love by the way!} has come out with a revamped menu and is serving a unique dish with this peculiar breed called Kadaknath Chicken.

As Dark As Our Souls
Move over Goth ice-cream, there’s a new food trend in town. Curious to know what Black Chicken tastes like? Chef Aaron Coutinho has included this rare species of chicken {originally from Madhya Pradesh but bred in some parts of Tamil Nadu}, after spotting it in one of Chennai’s oldest markets, Pallavaram Friday Market. Since it’s pretty rare, it is a bit expensive. So the peeps at Desi Di are rearing them free-range at the property where you can spot different kinds of fowl trotting about. We spotted a Kadaknath chicken that was quite a sight – these birds are really all black, from beak to feet!
The Desi Di Kadaknath Pepper Chicken comes up to about INR 599 for about 2-3 pieces. It’s cooked very carefully because its lean meat can get quite tough. We helped ourselves to a serving of the dish – semi gravy tossed in pepper and onions and dunked some toasted buttery pav in it and yes, it tasted pretty good. The meat is a little tougher than regular chicken and is dark and so are the bones! Is it very different from regular chicken flavour wise? Not too much, we thought, just that it had a slightly stronger meaty flavour. But you might want to try it for the novelty of the dining experience.
What Else?
If you’re not too keen on trying the chicken, they have introduced some delicious Tawa Fried Fish {the Red Snapper was really good so check with them if it’s available before you order}. Vegetarians, you can order a paneer version of this . You can also try the Durban Indian specialty Bunny Chow Curry {chicken or vegetarian} to share with the squad. There’s also the simple and light Mizoram Beef curry with Bamboo shoots that has a strong smokey flavour. Wash it all down with our personal favourite Lemon Barley Shikanji{viscous and refreshing!} and do give their new desserts a try. We absolutely loved the Bebinca Suzette. A dense coconut-milk based Goan dessert with citrusy bits of orange and mint that cut through the density of the dish with refreshing bursts of zing. Love!
