Get Down To The Roots
Originating in Brazil, Capoeira is a martial art form created by African slaves in the Colonial Era. The art form was made to look like a dance in order to mask its true nature as a lethal martial art from the slavers and so has rhythmic movements like spins and twists and even music to accompany it. Skip forward to today, where Capoeira enthusiast Abdul Sattar has brought it to our shores for a very different reason; to share his love for the sport to us.
Move It!
Drawn to Capoeira as a form of movement, Abdul believes practicing Capoeira to be far more fun than going to the gym and running on a treadmill, and I am inclined to believe him. With countless YouTube videos of capoeiristas spinning, leaping and moving with the grace and precision of a leopard it’s hard not to see why the sport is so exciting.
Rookies, don’t fret! Day one won’t have you doing spinning back kicks, instead you will start with the most basic of moves – the Ginga. Equated to a baby learning how to crawl and walk, the Ginga serves as a foundation for more complex techniques. The Ginga and the other basics are what’s in store for you in the beginner session. Wear clothes that you can exercise in and carry water and some food in case you get hungry.
So if you’re looking for a way to stay fit and active that’s fun, Capoeira is the deal for you, if not anything else think of it as a Sunday morning well spent. And it’s free!
