Chennai Board Gamers is a group of avid board game enthusiasts, looking to spread the love of board games to everyone — one game at a time.

Board Game Central

Initially a collection of friends who liked playing board games, Chennai Board Gamers is now a 750+ member strong Facebook group of budding board game enthusiasts. The variety of games that they’ve played is countless, ranging from board games to dice games and role-playing games. Settlers Of Catan almost sounds plebian after reading through the lineup of fancy board games that these folks have sourced.

Speaking to the founders, we came to learn that most board games aren’t commonly available in India, and if they are, they’re usually pretty expensive to buy. That barrier to entry is why most folk like you and I haven’t heard of games like Kingdomino or Century: Spice Road. So to break that barrier, the founders made their once private Facebook group of board gaming friends, public. The group is open for people looking to try out board games, and regularly hosts game days and connects buyers and sellers of board games.

What's Game Day?

A monthly event run by members of Chennai Board Gamers at a coworking space called Karya, Game Day aims to bring together board gamers from across the city. This beginner-friendly event happens on Sundays and is very relaxed. While the games start at around 2pm and go on till 9pm, you’re free to drop in and leave whenever you like. Additionally, they encourage people to bring their own board games for others to try out, provided you’re up for teaching newcomers.

If you’re the type to worry about having strangers ruin your game, don’t worry, there is a nominal fee of INR 150 fee levied to each attendee for the venue fees, replacing damaged games, and doing giveaways whenever possible. The event itself has around seven to eight tables at any given time, each table has its own board game and set of three to four players, so while it is okay to come whenever, if it’s a packed session you’ll probably have to wait for a spot to open up. Additionally to keep things interesting for everyone, the games that are played range in duration from 15 minutes per game to two and a half hours per game. The overall vibe is meant to be inclusive and welcoming, so fret not there’s good people here who are happy to show you the ropes.

So for this January, ditch the idiot box and try out the hobby you’ve always wanted to as a child.

When: The next board game session is happening on Sunday, January 21
