Year 10 Of The Rainbow Pride March Is Set To Happen This Month And You Should Go!

The information in this post might be outdated

What Is It?

The 10th edition of Chennai’s annual Rainbow Pride march is set to take place at the end of this month. Last year’s parade saw a crowd of over 600 come together for the walk and while the venue for this year is not confirmed yet, like last year, is most likely scheduled to take place at Rajarathnam Stadium in Egmore. Organised by a group of organisations called the Tamil Nadu Rainbow Collective, the march aims to raise awareness for the discrimination faced by the LGBTIQA+ community.

In case you were wondering, the march is safe to attend for all from a legal standpoint and will only be conducted after police permission is obtained. The march is a great way to learn more about the issues surrounding gender rights first hand in a safe space that’s open to healthy conversation. To attend all you have to do is show up, (rainbow coloured clothes are optional, wear what you want!), in fact if you’re looking to lend a hand, there’s a call for volunteers, so do check out their page in the link below for more details.

Who Is It For?

The march is for everyone. We’d like to stress that attending this event if you’re not LGBTQIA+ does not mean people will assume you are. There are plenty of heterosexual allies and supporters who come to show solidarity and support the cause. In fact, we think it’s important for people who are not negatively affected by unequal gender rights to take action and learn more as awareness is key to addressing these issues.

Why Should I Go For It?

Social justice causes like this are what help galvanise change at the macro level of governance and to see an organisation successfully host an event for 10 years is testament to the effort being put in. Section 377 while still not removed entirely has been rolled back quite a bit, and change is happening. Your attendance at this march will help advance that change and for people who feel strongly about the issue, we think it’s worth it for you to check out.
