What Makes It Awesome
Itching to make a break from your work desk-bound life and play some sport? The Chennai Trekking Club may just be your answer. A non-profit organisation run by volunteers, the club organises a huge number of activities on weekends and weekday mornings such as treks, sports, and social activities. The group may be less than 10 years old but has become one of the largest of its kind in South Asia with over 40,000 members. Expenses of the activities conducted are shared by the participants.
The group also conducts several large events on an annual basis such as marathons, triathlons. environment awareness drive and symposiums with the aim to slowly but steadily transform people’s now sedentary, unhealthy lifestyles and inspire them to take up a sport and outdoorsy activities. They conduct treks, runs, cycling events, swimming events and camping on a regular basis. Photo walks for the eager shutterbug and making art in public spaces to create awareness about various environmental causes are among the many activities on offer. (As part of Chennai Coastal Cleanup, Anna University’s walls were painted on by volunteers to speak of the impact of plastic on oceans.)
The group is also known for its rescue, relief and rehabilitation work conducted in the city during times of natural calamity. Apart from organising clean-up drives, its commitment to biodiversity is reflected in its regular tree planting, tree walks, turtle walks, and even snake walks. They also conduct blood donation drives, have taken part in public sanitation projects, and work towards spreading awareness on the city’s rich heritage.
