In little over an hour from Chennai, after driving on the beautiful East Coast Road, we reached Dakshina Chitra which is a well-preserved tourist destination that offers the visitor a glimpse of South India's rich culture and introduces us to an era long forgotten. The campus is divided into four states - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and undivided Andhra Pradesh. Each zone has well-recreated houses of these states belonging to a bygone era. Each house is full of items used by the respective households. You will find this a treasure trove - houses full of antique furniture, toys and idols remind us our rich heritage. This is also a great place for shutterbugs and selfie seekers.
Dakshina Chitra also houses several craftsmen who sell their handicrafts or art pieces at reasonable prices. And what adds to the thrill is that you can join these artisans and try your hand at something creative. We took part in a hand block printing session and landed up feeling rather happy about our creative side.
If you're hungry while exploring this magnificent culture museum, you can drop in at their restaurant and gorge on some delicious South Indian food. The entry to Dakshina Chitra Museum is around INR 100.
