What Makes It Awesome

If you’re looking for an intense workout that’s more of an out-of-the-gym, out-of-the-city experience, keep an eye out for updates on the FitKits FB page. All you got to do is sign up and they’ll get in touch with you, pronto! FitKits has tied up with the Covelong Surf School and for now, are offering 90 minute workouts at the Kovalam beach for free!

They’ll share updates two weeks before they pick a date for the next beach session. With the uneven surface and lack of footwear, it’s not going to be easy, but hey, the salty fresh air is going to keep your mind at ease and your body ready to go. I found FitKits in the basement of a building in Gopalapuram and met up with ShriHari Sivaraj (founder) who invited me to a class on a Monday evening workout. This workout is supposed to be a sort of wake up call to what’s in store for the rest of the week. He’s pretty accommodating, especially after I tell him I’m recovering from a knee injury since April.

We start with a warm-up session, 45 minutes of a good workout and then it’s time to cool down. The 45 minutes involves circuit training and has Hari showing me how to use the kettlebell, how to do planks, pull-ups, pushups  — the works. Each workout lasts 20 seconds and has 10-second breaks in between. What I loved about this is that I got to work on my form and it helped me understand correcting the basics of a workout. This workout is great for anyone who is starting afresh or getting back into shape after a break. There are five coaches on board, so free feel to ask for help!

Tuesdays focuses on the lower body muscles, Wednesdays are for cardio , Thursdays are for abs and core conditioning and strengthening and Fridays are for functional movements, a combination of what you’ve learnt from Monday to Thursday basically. So try not to miss classes in between to get the maximum from your workout.

They have ashtanga yoga classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6 am and 7 am. The classes cost INR 3,000 per month. And they have functional fitness classes from Monday to Friday (7 am to 8 am in the morning and 6pm to 7pm and 7pm to 8pm in the evenings). The classes cost INR 4,000 per month.
