Hew & Frost is a bakery run by Mridula (who is also a young designer) out of her home in Valsaravakkam. Wedding cakes are her speciality but she does so much more!

Artist In The Baking

Craving cakes that are too pretty to eat? But you still want to stuff your face in? Then look no further. To get an idea of how lovely home chef Mridula’s cakes are, just have a look at her Instagram handle here. Most of the pictures will be of elaborate elegant wedding cakes  like the chandelier cake and a wine and royal blue cake with gold sequins and beautiful bright edible flowers. So elegant! And you can find them in a variety of flavours too, the most popular being the signature Belgian chocolate cake. There’s also vanilla sponge with salted caramel filling and dark chocolate frosting, vanilla sponge with raspberry coulis filling and white chocolate frosting. She even makes customised cakes for birthdays too — think Game of Thrones, Rajinikanth and even kiddie themes.

The fondant cakes are priced at INR 2,200 per kg. A bit steep, but have a look at the detailing! You even get them in flavours like tiramisu, key lime pie, apple crumble tart, matcha latte, and wait for it, kulfi! Yes, that’s right! She recently made a kulfi-inspired cake and that was a super hit, she tells us. It was a mawa cake infused with rose and cardamom, sponges soaked with melted kulfi with chunks of khoya and chopped nuts! Whoa. She also makes a host of French desserts, particularly macarons. There’s even one with a local twist using the fruit pathaneer. The Pathaneer Kheer Fusion entremet has layers of pathaneer and kheer jelly encased in Vanilla Bavarois, served on a huge macaron — talk about glocal innovation!
