What Makes It Awesome
Started in 1987, Nizhal Studios was the passion project of Sai Raghunath a professional photographer and photojournalist. Along with his daughter, Sowmya, Sai Raghunath and his studio does more than just provide wedding photographs and photo shoots for magazines and newspapers.
They also started an initiative called “Travel with Nizhal” which gives photographers (both professional and aspiring) a chance to do more with their photography. Through this initiative, the studio organises opportunities for photographers to travel to other parts of Tamil Nadu and even Sri Lanka to capture the beauty of the countries through photography.
They also have photography workshops in association with Tamil Nadu Open University, after which, participants are given Government authorised certificates. The workshops happen in collaboration with travel groups and the mentor will travel along with the group to teach the basics of photography, composition and even how to frame and capture the subject in a unique way. And don’t worry, you don’t necessarily need to own a professional camera, you can still capture the sights using your phone cameras. But the most exciting thing is that Nizhal Studios also organises Photo Walks through Chennai and Trichy and anyone can be a part of these walks.
Mentored by Raghunath himself, each walk has a theme, allowing photographers to capture the essence of the parts of the city that they visit. Their first walk was conducted in Besant Nagar and every alternate Sunday since then, they’ve had walks through different parts of the city, including Koyambedu, Mylapore, Kanchipuram, Ponmalai Area (in Trichy) and more. They even select one photographer and their photograph as a winner per walk, so you could be the next winner if you sign up today!
