Celebrate Madras Week With This List Of Curated Activities Happening In Chennai
Lineside Photo Exhibition
We are super excited for this one! An exhibition of pictures taken around 50 years ago, by Ian Manning, of the suburbs of Madras along with pictures that have been curated and restored by Poochi Venkat himself, this event is the perfect kickstart to the week! The exhibition will be held at Dakshina Chitra Museum in Muttakadu at 11:00 am, so head on over for some inspiration.
Quiz - Madras And A Slice Of Its Sporting And Film History
The Press Institute of India in Taramani is organising a non-competitive quiz on the history of sports and film in Madras. The quiz master? Our very own Pratab Ramchand! The quiz is open to all and will be held on 21st August at 5:00 pm. Don't forget to put on your thinking caps and we'll see you there!
Film Screening - The Anglo Indians Of Madras - Case Study Pallavaram
Directed by Richard O'Connor and Harry MacLure, this film covers the migration and life of Anglo-Indian settlements in the Pallavaram Area. The Film will be screened at the Press Institute of India in Taramani, on 22nd Of August at 5:00 pm and a large crowd is expected, so try to get there early for the best seats! Don't forget popcorn :)
Play A Boardgame
On the 22nd August at 7:00 pm, you can kick off your shoes and turn on your game at the Board Room In Mylapore. The theme of the game will be based on Chennai and participants will be divided into teams and will be given clues to solve the puzzle. It's Storytelling Time
Pack those kiddos and rush to Higginbothams in Anna Salai for a fun filled session of interactive story telling by actor and superb story teller, Janaki Sabesh. The stories covered will be from the depths of Tamil literature for kids with titles like the Story and Song and The Lions Feast. The activity will be held on 23rd August at 5:00 pm and is open to all!
Workshop - Let's Explore Stone Age Tamil Nadu
Professor Shanti Pappu and Kumar Akhilesh of the Sharma Centre for Heritage Education, are holding a super interactive workshop on the stone-age in and around Chennai at 9:30 am on 24th August at the Sharma Center For Heritage In Sholinganallur. There are only 30 seats available and the registration fee is INR 200. The last day for signing up is on the 22nd of August. Walk : Understanding The Bohras In The City
Between Audiyappa Street and George Town, this walk covers the lifestyle and culture of the Bohra community in Chennai. The walk will be held at 4:30 pm on 24th August and the assembly point will be at Mohammedi Masjid gate and Angappa Naicken Street. The walk is open to all, so make sure you are on time to catch up with the group. Note that the area is quite congested and parking may be difficult.
Walk - Arcots Nawabi Trail In Triplicane And Mylapore
This walk will be conducted on the 25th of August at 6:00 am. The trail begins at the Chepauk Palace and will cover all the areas influenced by the Walajahi Nawabs. The assembly point is at the Walajah Road entrance to the Madras University. This walk is conducted by Kaniyan Heritage and they charge INR 800 for registration. Walk - The Royal Madras Yacht Club
Led By Capt. Vivek Shanbhag, this walk conducted on the 25th August will take you through the Royal harbor and its heritage sites. The walk will begin at 6:30 am, and participants are required to register. A fee of INR 1200 will be levied for registration and seats are open to a first-come-first-serve-basis. Walk - Photowalk for Children
Organised by YOCee.in and conducted by N. Ramaswamy, your kiddos will be treated to all the structures built during the colonial era, in Parrys. The walk will be held on 25th August at 6:30 am. Only 20 seats are available so grab yours fast. To register, you can call the coordinator at 9840544629. Parents will be allowed to accompany their kids but the tiny tots do the clicking. Children will have to get their own cameras and have been instructed to dress easy.
Tour - Trace Origin Of Madras
This tour will be conducted on 25th August in Pulicat, which is around 60 km from Chennai. For INR 1100 per head, the tour will begin at 7:00 am in Mahalingapuram and will take you through Pazhaverkadu and Tiruvallur Districts of Tamil Nadu. This full-day tour will give you insights into the history and land where modern India started. You can register at their website. AC-Bus trip, lunch and snacks are included in the fee.
Tree-Sure-Hunt
On August 25th at 10:00 am, a tree-sure hunt will be held at the Kotturpuram Tree Park. The event is for all kids above the 10 years, and we mean you, big kids, too. The Madras Quiz
At the Madras Management Association in Thousand Lights, be prepared to rack your brains with Quiz Master Sumanth Raman in a fun-filled session on Madras History. The quiz is open to all and the audience will be divided into teams of two. There is no age limit so expect questions from your fifth-grade history book too. The quiz will be held on 25th August at 2:30 pm for two hours, so come prepared with munchies to rack those grey cells.
Food Walk: Purasawalkam
This is our favourite part of the Madras Week! Celebrate the city's food heritage with local bites from stalls down the Purasawaikam street. The walk will begin at Kilpauk and will go on till you can eat no more. Get your spoons and forks ready on the 25th August at 5:00 pm and get your bellies over to Kakada Ramprasad in Kilpauk and have a blast!!!
