Kolams & Concerts In The Park: Mylapore Festival Is Here & We Can't Keep Calm

It is that time of the year when the soul fo the city lights up. Oh, we mean Mylapore. The Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival begins today with a list of competitions, dance, music and theatre performances, shopping stalls, concerts at parks, exhibitions, and heritage tours. And most importantly, food walk that will take you to the most iconic stores of Mylapore for some iconic street food. This year there will be more than 30 events that will take place at different venues. Here's what you should look forward to:

Dance, Music, And Theatre

We are at the fag end of Margazhi and it is time to finish off with class. There are nadaswaram performances, folk dance, music concerts, dance drama, kolattam, etc. Do look out for the Harichandran - a puppet show by B. Muthuchandran Kuzhuvinar. The performances will take place at 16 Pillar Mandapam.

Kolam Competition

Probably the only time of the year when you see more than 100 people on North Mada Street, drawing beautiful kolams. Silk saree clad mamis make it a photography phenomenon with their beautiful kolams. Don't forget to get an aerial shot fo this beauty, on January 12 and 13. There is also a Rangoli competition happening on January 13.

Traditional Games

Tamil Nadu is known for the origin of some of the oldest and traditional games - pallankuzhi and dayakattam. Sign up for these games and win exciting prizes, There is also a traditional games mela that will take place inside Lady Sivaswamy Ayyar Girls School, on January 12 and 13.

Concerts In The Park

Enjoy a musical evening with singers performing at the Nageswara Park. The concerts begin at 7 pm and will see performances by music students from across the city. 

Craft Zone

Head to Kumaraguru Street where you can find products made by members of self-help groups. From jewellery, household items, and decor items, there is a lot you can shop for here.

Food Street

Be it the jannal kadai or the iconic rose milk, Mylapore houses some of the best traditional food items - podis, pickles, applams, dosas, chat corners, oh, we could just go on. There are two food walks taking place from RK Mutt Road and will be conducted by Sridhar Venkataraman.

Eco-Friendly Products Bazaar

Check out for stalls put up along Sri Kapali Temple tank Road. This is again by self-help groups and entrepreneurs.
