Located in the Cuddalore District with a total size of over 45 square kilometres, Pichavaram is home to magnificent mangrove forests and islands spread across waterways. The Pichavaram Mangrove Forest is the world's second largest mangrove forest. It is also one of India's largest habitats for a diverse range of bird species, with 177 identified so far, including both migratory and resident birds. The best months to go birdwatching are November through January. This is when ornithologists, or bird watchers, can go and see the thriving bird population in action. Surrounded by towering trees and including over 50 islands and 4,400 canals, this interesting environmental gem draws in researchers and students. The forest continues to be strong, being a barrier against harm that could be caused to the interiors of the area, even after withstanding the destruction caused by natural calamities in 2004. Its bending canals were once a shield for smugglers also, but present safety measures protect its fragile environment. The forest presents a breathtaking setting for an amazing boating adventure.

Boating is the main thing to do in Pichavaram. Everyone (including babies) has to wear a life jacket, irrespective of how good one is at swimming. You'll get to choose between two types of boats: row boats and motor boats. It's better to go for the row boat because it lets you explore deeper into the forest compared to the motor boats, which can only cruise around in shallow water. Row boats are open to the sun, but they make for great Instagram stories among the mangroves. In addition to that, the rowboats make less noise and does not disturb the birds so you can revel in their beauty. When compared to motor boats, row boats are simpler to manoeuvre through the mangroves' narrow canals. The motorboat on the other hand has a roof, so it can be more comfortable if it's too hot outside. The catch is that the row boat journey initially only lasts one km into and out of the forest. To travel farther, you may have to pay the boatman a little bit more. The true magic occurs there, as you can completely appreciate the serene beauty of the surroundings when he takes you further inside.

Another interesting spot is the Pichavaram Beach. Secluded and surrounded by natural beauty, this place is accessible only by boat, but offers a great experience, especially after the peaceful boat ride. To reach the beach area you will have to cross a sandbar on foot which separates it from the backwater area. TTDC does not provide access to the beach but fear not, you can arrange a private tour from one of the local guides. They provide motorboat rides and arrange lunch, as well as harbour visits if you arrive early. Don’t worry about safety, it is a completely safe and personalized experience. The beach and the surrounding are well maintained and clean. So keep in mind to take any waste with you back to the mainland.

Located 14km away from Pichavaram is the Thillai Nataraja Temple, also known as Chidambaram Nataraja Temple. It is approximately a 28 minute drive. The temple is a revered Hindu shrine devoted to Nataraja, the divine embodiment of Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance. Full of history, the temple has undergone several renovations across different dynasties, including the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, and Cheras. The current structure dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Not just a revered Hindu site, it is also an architectural marvel. With nine gateways, four of which are intricately carved with towers called 'gopurams'. These towers are adorned with sculptures which adds to the grandeur feeling.

There may not be much to do in Pichavaram, but it remains ideal for a delightful getaway from the city, eliminating the necessity for an overnight stay. If you are in Pondicherry, it's only a 2 hour drive, and a 5 hour drive from Chennai. You can have a nice road trip and soak in the beauty of the mangroves, ancient temples and fresh seafood.
