Drive Down The Picturesque Ennore High Road To Get To The Scenic Thalankuppam Pier

Anirudh posted on 25 December

Shortcut

Once a seaport, the abandoned Thalankuppam Pier {also called the Nettukuppam Pier} is situated in Thalankuppam, a fishing hamlet along the Ennore High Road.

What is It?

Since the time of the British, people have travelled from different parts of the city to purchase the best fish from Thalankuppam Pier. The pier extends into the sea where you come face-to-face with peace and vitamin sea. A favourite as a shoot location for plenty of films, the pier is also fun to visit for a day trip.

Who Is It For?

Further down Fort St George is the Ennore High Road, along which lies the Thalankuppam Pier. The Ennore High Road is a visual treat by itself — similar to Mumbai’s Marine Drive and the Rock beach of Pondicherry, or even better. The Road runs along just a few meters from the sea, and makes it suitable for great photographs and an amazing view of the magnificent Bay of Bengal. As the area is not so popular, it is often overlooked by travellers. Situated 15 kms further down the famous Marina Beach, the Thalankuppam Pier is the best place for anybody looking for a calm place with a great view. Many Chennaiites rush to the pier early in the morning to click photos of the sunrise. The beaches in this area are squieky clean and beautiful. The pier itself is in ruins now, but nonetheless, has a breathtaking view of the sea. One could climb on to the pier by merely walking up to it even a few years ago, but in recent times, the high tides of the sea make a boat necessary to get to the pier.

Why Must I Go Here?

The pier lies in the lesser known and the least popular region of Chennai, the North, which is filled with industries, fishing harbours and a thermal plant. This is why not many know of this seaside beauty, and hence, the spot is never crowded.

Must Do

I drove down to Thalankuppam on a Sunday afternoon and what a day it was to be at the pier, with the sea breeze hitting my face and leaving a taste of salt. It was one of those days when the weather is perfect, in a city which sees four seasons of just summer. Luckily, I got to go boating with the local fishermen. I’d recommend you to take your camera; you don’t want to miss taking photos of one of the most beautiful places you’d find in Chennai.

How Was My Experience?

Located 20 kms north of the Port of Chennai, the pier lies near the mouth of the Ennore Creek and is within close proximity to the Ennore Port. Since it is mostly surrounded with fishing villages and harbours, not many hotels or restaurants could be found around it. Since it lies close to the Chennai centre, it doesn’t take too long to get back after visiting the location. However, I would advise you not to venture to the location after sunset as the area is crime-prone apparently.
