Bessy Reads is a unique silent reading community that is located within the quiet coastlines of Besant Nagar Beach in Chennai, which offers the best place for all readers. Starting at 6.00 a.m. each Sunday morning and lasting till 9.00 a.m., this get-together organized by duo Sanjana Patnaik and Kruthika Kumar serves as a great place for book lovers. Bessy Reads works to promote the love for literature in Chennai, a city famous for its literary spirit. They do not require formalities like submitting a membership, identity card or details through registration. Just head to the beach and immerse in the pages of a book undisturbed by activities that take place post 9 at the beach. On their Instagram, they regularly update their community members and welcome newcomers to join in the shared love of reading. 

Chennai Reads

This reading community at Gandhi Mandapam is a place where book lovers can come to relax every Sunday from 4 pm to 6 pm. The library is meant to be a safe and non-judgmental space where different kinds of people are welcomed, and it's completely fine for anyone to bring along any kind of reading material of their choice and get totally in touch with the world of silent reading. The specificity of the event is the social encounter, not the socializing but providing a calm and cosy place for people to enjoy their interests in literature with their fellow folks. A brief break at the end of the day enables them to talk casually, stack books, and take pictures for their social media platforms, but it is completely optional. This inclusive community has got Ritchie Street very close to landmarks like Anna University and Guindy National Park. No registration, just walk in, no problem. Indeed, on their instagram account they welcome queries and recommendations with pictures of their books.

Mylapore Reads

The idea which started as a spontaneous one has now grown into a vibrant silent reading movement, stealthily but steadily gaining strength. The founders believe that shared reading results in camaraderie, and organised the meetings during the soft drizzling rains in the company of felines at parks. Starting small, with the support of a few people this reading community has grown. The group has had a significant increase in attendance with a lot of people bringing in their children for this silent reading, sometimes volunteers gather the children together and read to them. This helps young kids to get involved in the world of literature.
