Need A Pick-Me-Up? We'll Tell You Where To Find Wholesome Comfort Foods In Chennai
Maggi – Maggevala
35 varieties of Maggi, all served hot from the pot at this tiny eatery in Kodambakkam. They’ve got a butter masala variety that’s tangy, a chili cheese Maggi that we liked the best, a Chinese noodle take on Maggi in the form of their spicy Schezwan Maggi and plenty more, all below the price of INR 100. Mac N Cheese – Sandy’s
Sandy’s Chocolate Laboratory is known for its desserts and sweets and less so for their savoury preparations. That’s why you need to try their signature Mac n Cheese. Served in a massive bowl, it’s safe to say that it’s more than sufficient for one person and will leave you with a big smile and full stomach. We highly recommend washing it down with a cool lemon iced tea.

Saigon Pho – Va Pho
Speaking of food served in big bowls, the Vietnamese noodle soup called the Saigon Pho at Va Pho is just as yummy, albeit with a little fewer calories. The hot tasty bowl of noodles, chicken broth, chicken and herbs are available for INR 179 and at INR 169 for the vegetarian version. Mmm, pho for the soul!
Curd Rice – Sangeetha
The classic Tamil comfort food, curd rice, is served at Sangeetha with a garnish of curry leaves, dal tadka and a little bit of salt. Perfect for the stomach that wants something simple and tasty. The best part is they usually have seasonal pickles to go with it! Lastly do remember to round off the meal with a nice cup of hot filter coffee as it’s always amazing there. Price for a plate of special curd rice costs INR 89.
Area 69 - Double Roti
With a name as bold as the “Area 69 Burger”, it’s hard to not meet it with high expectations, but that’s fine because it is unbelievable. Consisting of a beef patty topped with lemon aioli, between strips of bacon, melted cheese, caramelized onions, steak sauce, and a fried egg, the Area 69 burger is everything you could want in a burger. Meat, cheese, and more meat! The Area 69 Burger is priced at INR 325 and INR 425 for the challenge version.
Ice Cream - Everywhere!
Not exactly wholesome but hey, there’s nothing more comforting than digging into a tub of ice cream when you’re feeling low now, is there? There’s no shortage of ice cream parlours and dessert joints in the city, and so you’re never too far away from a nice cup/cone of ice cream. Long-standing ice cream parlours like Freez Zone in Alwarpet have been making amazing sundaes and softies for years now, whereas slightly newer spots like Amadora and Cream Stone have their own signature preparations; like Amadora’s own five bean vanilla ice cream (best had with their underbaked chocolate cake!) or Cream Stone’s, nutty Arabian Night sundae that’s best had in their freshly made waffle cup.
