Among the great things about Chennai is that we always, always have ice cream weather and that’s probably why we are a city with an endless appetite for frozen desserts. There are a number of outlets in Chennai that serve ice cream, but here are our favourite places that are dedicated to whipping up ice-cold deliciousness.

Shmoozies Hand-Crafted Ice-Creams

Shmoozies only opened a few months ago but this Egmore ice cream joint has already become a much-loved hangout in the city. They serve small batch, handcrafted ice creams in flavours like Pink Guava, Mango Mint, Buttered Walnut Candy, Chai Spice and Banoffee Pie to just name a few. Is your mouth watering already? I know mine is!

Amadora Gourmet Ice Cream and Sorbet

If you’re from Chennai and haven’t been to Amadora in Nungambakkam yet, we need to revoke your citizenship! Chennai’s beloved ice cream parlour serves handcrafted ice-creams in flavours like Malted Milk, Five Bean Vanilla, Dark Chocolate Sorbet {perfect for vegans!} and Maami’s Filter Kaapi among others. Their sundaes and milkshakes are doubly delicious.

Swensens

Swensens in Nungambakkam is an international ice cream and dessert chain that opened its doors to Chennai the previous year. Their ice cream milkshakes are legendary and their shake floats deserve a special mention. Try their Turkish Coffee flavour if you’re up for something unique and if you’re out with friends, take on their massive banana split!

Amelie’s

Amelie’s is a spanking new café in Alwarpet that has a very interesting in-house ice cream selection. Where else in the city can you find Chilli Popcorn ice-cream? They also serve very interesting ‘trios’ where three flavours are mixed into one ice cream. If you don’t like ice creams that are too sweet {really?} try their Greek yoghurt and berry flavour – its tartness will really hit the spot.

Kulfiwala

If kulfi is where your ice cream loyalties lie, make a beeline to Kulfiwala in Egmore, where authentic malai kulfi is served in several desi special flavours like Meetha Paan and Kaju Tutty Fruity. If you like quirky flavour combos, go for the Guava kulfi which is served with a smattering of chilli powder. It’s a flavour explosion in every way!

196 Degree Below

If you’ve longed Masterchef style desserts then you should head straight to 196 Degree Below in Alwarpet and give their liquid nitrogen ice creams a try! Their delicious desserts and drinks are all served in beakers and test tubes to accentuate the science and chemistry behind their process. And they have vegan options too!

Movenpick Ice Cream Boutique

Movenpick is among Chennai’s older ice cream parlours but who says that’s a bad thing? Over the years Movenpick has garnered a loyal clientele who frequent the parlour for their signature sorbets and sundaes. Come here on a rainy evening and try their warm, toasty waffles with two scoops of caramel ice-cream and you’ll know what bliss tastes like!
