What Makes It Awesome
Started approximately a year ago by talented slackliner and music enthusiast Eashwar Mathur, Trooze is a startup that aims to bring Chennai’s Indie music scene to the fore. Currently, most bands and artists perform at bars, pubs or concerts and while they do have a formidable fan following, they’re not accessible to everyone. Not only that, spaces like Unwind Centre and Bay 146 are towards one side of the city, and leave out Vadapalani, Anna Nagar and other parts of the city.
Trooze aims to fix that by hosting gigs and jam sessions at cafes/restaurants/open spaces across all parts of the city. They host gigs in places like The MadHatter’s Tea Garden in Chetpet and Urban Desi House in Thuraipakkam. The gigs are open to musicians and non-musicians who want to listen to fresh original content, with a small entry fee of approx. INR 100, to cover overheads.
They’re informal in nature and typically attract a crowd of around 20-25. Musicians are required to sign up on their website for free, after which they’re free to attend these sessions (they need to bring their instruments). If you’re a budding musician these jam sessions a great way to meet local musicians and showcase your talent. Any bands or collaborations you form with other artists at these jam sessions will be supported by Trooze. That means assured places to play!
Trooze has picked up 250 local artists in Chennai along with 170 visiting artists and hosted many events. They’re looking to grow their flock by adding new venues across the city, so if you know of a space that would be great for a jam session, get in touch with them! Their popularity comes from the fact that there is almost always fresh new music you’ve definitely not heard, at every one of these gigs. There’s a ton of great artists in Chennai and we love that Trooze is giving them a stage to shine.
