Vastra, by Deepa has customised dresses, skirts, crop tops, and salwars, that are designed from old sarees.

What Makes It Awesome

The next time you are about to give away your mother's old Kancheevaram saree, think twice. You would rather give it to Deepa, who can transform the saree into either a dress, anarkali, crop top-skirt or a fancy salwar. Chennai-based Deepa started Vastra, a clothing brand, two-years-ago after she had designed clothes for a friend's wedding. She had made a dress out of a saree which was a huge hit. So, she quit her HR job and turned to become an entrepreneur. But, other than converting old sarees, she also designs new clothes and mix and matches fabric to come up with a fabulous outcome.

If you are looking for something fancy, she can also do embroidery work on the fabric. Zardosi, aari, embroidery or sequins, you name it and she can get it done. As for the fabric, she mostly uses silk and velvet for the bridal collection. For something casual, she can get a dress done out of soft silk, malai silk or cotton. But don't expect two dresses to look the same. Each piece is custom made and Deepa doesn't stock clothes like the big brands. Every dress is different and people like it that way, she says. We loved how she recreated actress Keerthy Suresh's look from the movie, Mahanadi recently and looked stunning in a pink silk saree and brocade blouse. We cannot wait for them to recreate the Baahubali characters, next.

Pro-Tip

She also customises men's wear. Think sherwani, suits and blazers, Deepa can design them for you. For now, she only designs for the groom but will soon be designing everyday wear, too. Yay! If you want matching clothes on your big day, Deepa can make them too, in fact, with a theme. So, call her in advance to place your order.
