I've loved stationery ever since I can remember. Not only was I a serial stationery hoarder but I would swap pieces from my collection with friends for things I had my eye on! My favourite brand growing up was Lisa Frank - colorful and kitschy. But as the years went by, I've been digging around for local brands to turn my loyalties toward. So here are some of my favourite Indian eco-friendly stationery brands.

Dopology

I came across Dopology's stall at a flea market in Bangalore two years ago. What instantly caught my eye were their newspaper pencils, plantable notebooks and cheery smiles. Husband and wife duo Rahul & Akshata are eco-warriors and reuse and recycle as much as they can and are always looking for fresh product & growth ideas and interesting collaborations. My current favourites are the Samyukta x Dopology 2021 planner and seed bookmarks. Do check them out!

BioQ

BioQ has a wide variety of eco-friendly products and stationery kits. Their design sensibility and affordable range make this a very appealing brand. Plus, the little kits are perfect as kid's party favours. My experience with BioQ has been great - they handle bulk orders easily and offer customization too.

Pepaa

Not only does Pepaa offer lovely plantable stationery and planet-positive rakhis but they offer other unique products as well. One that caught my attention recently was their recycled PET bottle T-shirt made out of about 12 PET plastic bottles. Kudos to their team for thinking above and beyond the waste and plastic problem we are facing. They handle bulk orders as well - with customization.

Devraaj

This company has beautiful handmade paper and eco-friendly gift wrapping paper. They make seed cards and gift tags aside from the usual plantable stationery. They handle customization for weddings and events.

Based in the hills of Kalimpong, Mayel Crafts isn't a stationery brand, per se. But one product that I've bought, used and liked, is their bamboo pen. They offer a few varieties of the pen ranging from basic to premium and offer custom-etching on it as well. Mayel Crafts is working hard towards reviving lost arts and crafts in the region and creating livelihoods for the people of the community. Amazing spirit, Team Mayel.
