Trek Up The Mullayanagiri Peak In Chikmagalur For Splendid Views And Lush Meadows

    Shortcut

One of the highest peaks in Karnataka, Mullayanagiri is a must visit for avid trekkers. On your way to the top, you’ll see mist-covered greenery, deep caves, shrines, and spectacular hills in the distance.

    Over The Top

In the past few years, Mullayanagiri has been discovered by trekking enthusiasts from around South India. Believed to be one of the tallest peaks around here, this gem sits in the Chikmagalur taluk. And if you love the outdoors, it is an ideal, half-day getaway when you are visiting here. The best time to come by is during the early mornings {it can get crowded after that} and in the non-monsoon months. Do carry a warm jacket because it tends to get chilly as you make your ascent. You will also need a permit from the local forest department to make the trek.

Mullayanagiri is around 1,925 metres {above sea level} and that may scare the newbie trekkers amongst you. But there’s no need. While the terrain can get tricky at times, it’s nothing that should scare you off. At the foot of the hill, there’s a narrow rugged path called ‘sarpadari’ from where you can begin your ascent. Do stick to this route since it is the safest.

    Trail Off

The stone-strewn pathway then opens out to a rocky stairway that you can climb. While you huff and puff your way to the top, you’ll find plenty to marvel at. The hill is covered in unspoilt greenery and you can spot colourful flowers and shrubbery peeking at you. The terrain is also strewn with plenty of shrines, many of them dedicated to Nandi, and there’s a prominent temple at the peak too. You can also look into caves and gorges, although we don’t recommend that you explore them.

At the top, prepare to be bowled over by the views in front of you. The hills are shrouded in mist and, if you are here in the wee hours of the day, you can catch a brilliant sunrise. Do stick around, for a few more hours {carry your own food though}, for the fog to lift so that you can get a sharper picture of the surrounding hills.
