Salt Mango Tree in Indiranagar is situated on 12th Main Road. We popped in during lunchtime and it was fairly crowded. Post a quick scan of the limited menu on the chalkboard, we ordered the Thalassery chicken biryani. Since we have heard a lot about the biryani, we had high expectations about the taste and flavour. And boy, we weren’t disappointed. Served in a clay pot, the aromatic biryani is not made from the usual basmati rice but rather from short-grain Khyma rice that adds that extra bit of aroma. Delicately spiced, we loved the use of cashew nuts, raisins and fried onions that brought in an explosion of flavour with every mouthful. The biryani was served with cucumber raita, dry chammandi (dry coconut chutney), papad, and pickle. We absolutely loved the spicy chammandi.
We love the fact that they serve their meals on banana leaves, and their food is the real deal. Malayalis, you will approve! Salt Mango Tree has minimal decor with tables arranged neatly and spaciously for everyone to move around. The ambience is quiet with regional music being played. The service is quick and the banana leaf plate is a major win for us. Indiranagar’s 12th Main needed a Kerala restaurant desperately and with Salt Mango Tree just one lane away, we have finally found ourselves the missing link. The Thalassery biryani at Salt Mango Tree is our BFF. Plus, the banana leaf meals make for such a pretty picture.
