Grandma Knows Best: You Need To Check Out This Lovely New Chettinad Restaurant ASAP

Shortcut

Paati Veedu, a new addition to the many South Indian restaurants in the city, is winning hearts for its traditional interiors and authentic 7-course menu. And there’s something in store for your paati too!

Touch Of Tradition

Paati Veedu is more than just a restaurant, offering plenty to explore for Chennaities. One step into this multi-storey bungalow in T Nagar and it’s like taking a trip back to your childhood, if you grew up in Chennai. The vegetarian restaurant named Bhakshana welcomes you with long lost traditional games like Pallanguzhi, Aadu Pul Aatam, Dahdi and others beside a magical entrance. And then there are old school windows, Chettinad pillars, lanterns, radios and everything from our grandparent’s homes, kicking in the nostalgia. There’s even several black and white images from the past adorning the walls here.

Coming to the food, be ready to shell out  INR 890 per head, for the 7-course meal that includes everything, right from Channa Sundal to Puli Sadham, Pachadis, Vatha Kozhumbu, Semiya Payasam and even filter coffee. Yes, with a menu that’s altered every few days, Paati Veedu’s spread is quite the extended version of our typical meals.

For us what worked was the Panagam, yes, that welcome drink that our own paati wouldn’t let us skip! Moving on, worth trying out were the Vazhaippo Vadai, Thengai Pal Thalipu Idyappam, Morr Kozhambu, Vatha kozhambu and Sepangilangu fry. Most of the dishes are simple, less spicy and very satisfying.

Don’t forget to take a sip of their filter coffee, served like in our coffee anna‘s trays. Oh, the restaurant also hosts a sweets and savouries shop, from where you could pick up homemade Muruku, Chakli, mouth watering Mysore Pak and some tangy mango pickle to take back home too.

Grandma's Secrets

For those of you who are looking to chill at this quaint place, there is also a new colourful cafe corner opening up in few weeks. This place would serve starters and is perfect to lounge around and have conversations over filter kaapi.

We managed to catch up with the humble makers of this cute place and they tell us, there’s an R&D kitchen coming up. Which means, you could actually show off your culinary skills someday and get your dish on to their dynamic menu. So what we are saying is, it’s actually time to take your grandmother along and showcase her secret gem of  a dish to the world { it is named paati veedu after all!}. The R&D is said to begin in June and will include your recipes and guess what? The dishes will be named after the chefs themselves! How awesome is this!?
