Cycling Yogis, a community born out of a passion for cycling and a deep appreciation for heritage and history, embarked on its journey in 2012, with founder Ramanujar Moualana’s fascination with cycling, which began during his school days, leading him to form this unique group. In 2010, he embraced cycling as not just a fitness activity, but as a means to explore the rich heritage and historical treasures that Chennai had to offer. Inspired by the diversity in cycling interests, ranging from racing to endurance, the founder envisioned something distinct — a group that would focus on heritage tourism. Thus, Cycling Yogis was born, with a mission to combine the love for cycling with the exploration of Chennai's profound heritage, and the name perfectly encapsulates their commitment to both physical fitness and a deeper spiritual connection with the city's historical roots.
The group observes and commemorates significant festivals and holidays, including Republic Day, World Heritage Day, and Madras Day. The popularity of these rides has surged, with registrations filling up rapidly upon announcement and their initiatives have been bolstered by invaluable support from Tamil Nadu Tourism and the Archaeological Survey of India, Chennai. Thanks to the support of numerous individuals, they've successfully established over 100 trails, each meticulously documented in book form with QR codes and route maps. Their efforts have not only gained local recognition but have also received international attention, with The Goethe Institute in Germany approaching them to collaborate on a global heritage trails for Georgetown, a project they are immensely proud to have curated. The Georgetown trail has since become a popular attraction, attracting both locals and tourists. Remarkable achievements of Cycling Yogis include receiving the Tamil Nadu State Tourism Award in 2022 and their cycling trail to Pulicat Lake, Pazhaverkadu, garnering international recognition by being featured in The Guardian, a prominent UK publication.
The team has authored nine books, one of which delves into the century-long history of cycling in Madras. The other books are dedicated to various trails within the city, offering readers a glimpse into Chennai's cultural tapestry. Furthermore, Cycling Trails initiated vintage bicycle exhibitions during one of their book launches, which have now become a cherished part of the annual Madras Week celebrations they curate. These exhibitions feature a diverse array of vintage bicycles, attracting collectors and enthusiasts who proudly display their prized cycles on a dedicated platform.
With their unwavering commitment, Cycling Yogis breathe life into history, extending a warm invitation to everyone to uncover Chennai's rich tapestry while embracing a healthier way of life.
