Rooftop Bars & Restaurants In Chennai That Offer More Than Just A Stunning View

Anna posted on 07 November

The weather is Chennai is finally acceptable for rooftop dinners and drinks after work and even with the rain hindering our social lives and clogging up the roads, there are still some places with enough cover and protection to let you enjoy your meal, while also enjoying the cool breeze and the view. And we’ve got a list of some of the best rooftop restaurants and bars for you to check out in the city.

BOATS

Facing Elliot’s Beach, BOATS {Based On A True Story} is one of the newest and most popular spots in the city. During the weekends, you’re going to find it hard to get a good spot, because it gets crowded pretty quickly, but it’s still a pub you don’t want to miss out on. Thanks to the rain, you’re not going to be able to see or enjoy much of the otherwise lovely view, but what you can definitely enjoy is the music and the drinks! BOATS has a long list of DJs that show up every now and then to spin some of the latest and best tracks, so get up and dance if you can. And that’s not all, they have some pretty cool offers too, including midweek offers to help you get through the rest of the week. Plus, take in the décor – walls adorned with beachy vibes, a giant octopus and the bathroom walls are covered in Archie comics!

MASH

Another restaurant facing Elliot’s Beach, MASH has been around for a long time. It might be a small space, but it’s got a lot of character. The best part is they have breakfast on the weekends, so you can enjoy a classic breakfast of eggs, grilled tomato, bread and hash browns with a hot cup of coffee to wake you up. And even better is that you can have your eggs done up in all kinds of fancy and exciting ways, including something called ‘The Chicken & Egg Race’ which is a chicken masala omelette! All of this and a killer view, we call that a win.

Azzuri Bay

Moving on from Besant Nagar and into Adyar, Azzuri Bay may not have complete cover for the rooftop section of the restaurant, but each table has its own sunshade umbrella and it still sets quite the romantic mood for the evening. On a day when it’s not raining, the tables outside are perfect for that candlelit dinner with your better half. But you know what makes Azzuri Bay a really great place to be? Their vast menu covering Pan-Asian, Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, including great soups to enjoy during this cold and wet weather. A sip of the Cream of Broccoli soup and you’re going to be ready to battle the Chennai monsoons.

Bamboo Bistro

What was once Terrance Café & Grill is now called Bamboo Bistro and they still serve quite the combination of cuisines – North Indian, Italian and Chinese anybody? It’s a casual spot to hang out, no matter the weather or the time of day. But here’s what is really special about their menu – they have tapas every evening from 7pm to 11pm. They’ve also got sandwiches and burgers, which are staple for any restaurant, as well as pastas and pizzas. And if you’re in a healthy mood, try the Tossed Salad {perfect for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians}.

Up North, The Raintree Anna Salai

You know what really hits the spot during the rains? Comfort food. And Up North’s menu features all the dishes that comfort and remind us of home. They have a “Dal Aur Chawal” {rice and dal} section and all you need from this is the Maah Di Kali Dal – it’s made of black urad dal and rajma, garlic, ginger, red chillies and ghee and of course a portion of rice. You don’t even have to worry about the rain or getting drenched while you enjoy your meal, because the entire rooftop is covered to still allow you to enjoy the view and the cool weather.

Kefi, Taj Club House

One of the most popular and well known Mediterranean restaurants in the city, Kefi has both indoor and outdoor seating. Of course, if the rain is too heavy, sitting indoors might be the best decision, but on a cool and dry evening, enjoying the Chennai weather and the gorgeous view with fantastic food is always a good idea. And that’s not all. If you make a reservation ahead of time, the staff will set up a romantic candlelit dinner for two.
